School Improvement Network - Practical Scalable Measurable

Diversity and Equity Training

For classroom examples of this and other topics visit our Strategy of the Week section.

"No child left behind" means that every student, regardless of race or socioeconomic status, has the right to an education that encourages and allows him or her to achieve at high levels. Sadly, disturbing discrepancies exist between the academic achievement of white students and students of color, and between students of varying economic status. The reasons for the achievement gaps found within schools and districts include problems like misunderstanding race, lowered expectations, and a curriculum that does not speak to minority experiences. Current federal laws mandate that gaps must be closed, but many schools and districts are unsure of what to do and even doubt that eliminating gaps is possible.

Courageous Conversations About Race PD 360 Video Program

Through the use of Courageous Conversations About Race, your staff will begin to close your school or district’s achievement gaps by engaging in honest and safe dialogue about the impact of race and racism on student achievement. Expert Glenn Singleton will help you and your teachers reach a deeper understanding of the racial experience, and by applying the strategies shown through real classroom examples, teachers will learn to create an environment of equity where every student can achieve, regardless of race. Sign up for a free trial to view the complete program.

No Excuses! How to Increase Minority Student Achievement

If you have ever doubted if achievement gaps could be closed, you need to see how 10 schools from across the country are rapidly closing or have completely closed their gaps by institutionalizing equity – meaning every student receives the individualized support they need to reach a common standard. To help you follow the lead of these exemplary schools, the School Improvement Network developed the Equity Framework, a research-based model that ties together the similarities found in these 10 schools. The Equity Framework allows you to comprehensively address student achievement by focusing on leadership, school culture, and teaching and learning. Features educational experts Jamie Almanzan, James Comer, Bonnie Davis, Kati Haycock, Gary Howard, Sonia Nieto, Beverly Daniel Tatum and more. Available in elementary and secondary editions. Sign up for a free trial to view the complete program.

You must then provide them with the tools to help every student succeed. This award-winning program featuring Mary Montle Bacon outlines the three key principals of acceptance, accommodation, and affirmation, and demonstrates these principals through many real classroom examples of teachers succeeding with low-income students. Sign up for a free trial to view the complete program.
