Stephen (Steve) M. Preston retired in March 2006 after forty-one years in public education. "As a School Improvement Network consultant, he brings valuable experience in teaching, administrating, teacher development, and educational program development.

Steve earned a B.A. in History and a M.A.T in Social Science Education from the University of North Carolina. He went on to earn an Ed.D. in Learning Environments from Harvard University.

Steve worked as a teacher-developer in North Carolina and then as a teacher and curriculum specialist in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He spent several summers as a fellow and research assistant at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. He served as a principal of secondary schools in both Massachusetts and Georgia. Steve began his thirty-two year tenure at the Georgia Department of Education in 1974. While at the Department of Education, he acted as a designer, developer, and director of innovative responses to needs identified by Georgia educators. He developed and directed a number of original programs that have greatly contributed to solving the needs of educators, including the Evaluation of the Georgia Staff Development Program, the Georgia Report Card, the Georgia Leadership Academy, the Georgia Schools of Excellence, the Georgia Scholar Program, the Department of Education Planning Committee, and the Georgia Research and Development Utilization Project. He served in a number of capacities while at the Georgia Department of Education, including the director of numerous divisions within the department.
