Dr. Carol Santa is the developer of Project CRISS (Creating Independence through Student-owned Strategies), a research-based, national support system with the goal of increasing student-centered teaching, independent learning, and student achievement. Project CRISS has proven to be especially effective for reading in the content areas and has been used in 33 states, as well as in Europe and the Middle East.
In addition to her work with Project CRISS, Dr. Santa is a co-founder and Director of Education at the Montana Academy, a boarding school for psychologically troubled youth. She also served as the president of the International Reading Association and was the senior author and editor of Pegasus, a reading program developed entirely by teachers. Dr. Santa has experience as a public school teacher, a curriculum coordinator for the Kalispell Public Schools in Montana, and as a college professor at Rutgers University. She has written over fifty articles and seven books, including Early Steps: Learning from a Reader.
Dr. Santa earned her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and Psychology of Reading from Temple University. She also holds a M.S. in Elementary Education from Purdue University and a B.A. in Psychology from Whitman College.
