As a natural extension of PLCs, walkthroughs allow teachers to go beyond just focusing on student data; they take the focus to the classroom to observe what actually helps to foster greater student learning. The new Practical Walkthroughs program presents an effective protocol for conducting walkthroughs and examines the benefits of such a practice.
Created by educational expert Laureen Cervone, the purpose of this kind of walkthrough is to help teachers get better at what they do. The focus is on student learning and what works, rather than on blaming or judging.
The walkthrough protocol presented in this program is based on three core beliefs:
• All students have the ability to master a rigorous, standards-based curriculum.
• Classroom teachers want to grow as professionals and constantly improve their craft.
• The greatest leverage point for transformational growth in student achievement exists in the classroom: in the interaction between the student, the teacher, and the content.
Teachers will learn the benefits of conducting walkthroughs that focus on student achievement and that stimulate professional conversations around classroom practice.
