By Cameron Pipkin

When designing a Common Core Standards lesson plan for Fifth Grade reading, it’s important to go back to the foundational skills laid out in the Core. However, the foundational skills for reading in the Common Core, even for elementary kids, can look pretty daunting. For example, early to mid elementary “Common Core Reading: Foundational Skills” require that students perform a number of complex tasks:

1. Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.

2. Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas.

3. Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text.

Never fear! The following Common Core Standards lesson plan fifth grade reading fulfills these standards. It takes what otherwise seems complex, and breaks it into a simple, manageable series of tasks. Click here for the lesson.

Just as a disclaimer, this work comes from a group called Kidspiration. They provide digital lesson plans for teachers. Their services, of course, aren’t free. However, the lesson plan that I’ve posted is pretty straightforward, and shouldn’t require much more than a pen and paper, or some fooling around on a Word document to reproduce, if you don’t feel inclined to sign up for a trial.

Essentially, this simple, effective Common Core Standards lesson plan fifth grade reading prompts students to generate questions utilizing the kind of proven visual teaching techniques that are effective with many different kinds of learners. It’s also a model that can be repurposed and reused with many texts, over the course of many grades.
