Joellen Killion
Joellen Killion brings years of education experience to her work as a consultant for the School Improvement Network. Before starting her work with the National Staff Development Council in 1997, Ms. Killion served as a secondary school English and foreign language teacher, as well as a high school department chair, a language arts specialist, and a staff development specialist.
Ms. Killion has held a number of positions on the National Staff Development Council (NSDC), including president. She is currently the Director of Special Projects, where she focuses on improving teacher quality and student achievement. She is the author of the NSDC column on Code of Ethics and contributes often to the Journal of Staff Development. Ms. Killion wrote the three-volume What Works series, in which she summarized long-term studies of what staff development was most effective for elementary, middle, and secondary teachers. Her latest book, Assessing Impact: Evaluating Staff Development, is a resource guide that will assist schools and district-level staff development leaders in planning and conducting evaluations of their staff development programs. Besides the evaluation of staff development, Ms. Killion has been instrumental in the promotion of coaching as a successful part of professional development. Her study of the role of online learning in professional development resulted in E-Learning for Educators: Implementing the Standards. Along with her writing and research, Ms. Killion has presented at numerous national and state conferences.
