Kentucky’s Associate Commissioner of Education shares her blueprint for total school transformation

SALT LAKE CITY — Feb 15, 2012 —Felicia Cumings Smith, Associate Commissioner of Education for the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), will discuss the dramatic changes seen in Kentucky’s K-12 education with attendees of the 2012 School Improvement Innovation Summit, July 16-17 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Smith has been instrumental in implementing rigorous new standards in her state that align with national Common Core Standards.

With a goal of 65 percent of students both college and career ready by 2015, Kentucky has positioned itself as a national leader in implementing the Common Core Standards. Smith will share the radically innovative strategies put in place at every level to reach this goal, the exciting results already achieved in 2012, and the lessons learned along the way. Topics to be covered include the KDE’s new, balanced assessment and accountability system, their intensive PD initiative, and the new system of collaboration with post-secondary education so all students can be prepared for life and career after school.

“The annual Innovation Summit offers a unique opportunity for leaders in the education industry to sit down together, debate tactics, and exchange ideas that will ultimately advance education,” says Chet Linton, President and CEO of School Improvement Network. “We encourage all attending state, district and school leaders to speak up, share experiences, and discuss their most successful strategies during this highly collaborative summit.”

The 2012 Innovation Summit will include the following strands:

Additionally, in response to numerous requests for in-depth work sessions on mapping to the Common Core, a separate, two-day intensive workshop has been added to the program this year— the Common Core Institute — hosted and lead by Dr. Heidi Hayes Jacobs, a nationally recognized expert on the Common Core. This highly interactive two-day workshop will provide unique, personalized Common Core training, including an introduction to LiveBook and LivePlanner, available only through School Improvement Network.
